Lacking Motivation to Workout? Here are 5 Easy Steps to Help Get You Back on Track!

By: Teri Elkins

Lack of Motivation to Workout

We all experience (even myself) a lack of motivation from time to time.  There are some days (or weeks) that you just don’t feel like going to the gym or working out at home. For some, it may be a hormonal imbalance that is leaving you feeling “blah” and about as motivated as a teenager on a Saturday morning! However, you know better and realize how important getting daily exercise is to your emotional and physical well-being.

But you have no idea how to get your “Mojo” back. No worries, I have listed 5 easy steps that will help you get your 94037921“Mojo” back TODAY!

1) Find a workout buddy

Having someone to be accountable to and vice versa has been key in my own motivation.  Nearly 10 years ago when I started (again) my weight loss journey I got back into exercise by going for early morning walks with my best friend. Having a “workout buddy” was crucial in my success then and even today. Another great option is hiring a personal trainer. They offer great one/one support, motivation and will teach you proper form for each exercise.

2) Try a new exercise

After doing the same exercise over and over, I get to the point where I do not enjoy it anymore and will stop exercising all together.  When that happens, I try to find a new exercise classes to try, develop a new workout routine or simple by some new gym clothes! Sometimes just having a fun new outfit to wear to the gym gets me motivated!

3) Remember your why19140355

Why did you start working out or why do you want to start working out can be motivating in its self.   Are you
wanting to lose weight, gain more energy, increase strength, train for an event, better manage your stress, lower cholesterol, help with depression, or lower your risk of developing chronic.

4) Fitbit (or some other tracking device)

A few months ago my husband and I bought Fitbits.  Since my husband and I have gotten our new Fitbits, he has lost nearly 20 pounds!  The Fitbit tracks our heart rate during our workouts, which allows me to see the summary of how many minutes I was in the cardio zone, fat burning zone and peak.  Plus, you can join online challenges and compete with other individuals who have.

5) Anything is better than nothing36114167

When it comes to exercise, it doesn’t matter if you are taking a 60 minute group class, running 5 miles, or going for a 30 minute walk….JUST MOVE YOUR BODY!  In times when I am just not “feeling it” and the thought of going to the gym is unbearable, I will simply go back to what I have ALWAYS enjoyed….WALKING!  Being able to go for a walk outside (if possible) and looking at the green trees, feeling the sun on my face and smelling nature is very therapeutic.  I will just put on my headphones and focus on enjoying nature.  I do aim to walk at least 30 minutes at a moderate pace, but even 10 minutes is better than nothing. I have found that I actually have more energy, sleep better, am able to control my appetite and manage my stress when I am working out on a consistent basis.
