Control Your Time, Control Your Health

Reduce your stress levels by developing excellent time management skills. How many times have you heard someone say, “There isn’t enough time in the day”? You have a lot of pressure from outside sources on your time from friends, family, social activities, second careers and more. It is easy to get overwhelmed and feel that there is not enough time to do it all.

Some people think that this changes when you retire. This may be true for the first few weeks. However, many people find, before long they even have more demands on their time and have difficulties juggling all of the new activities they have added to their schedule.

You may wonder what time management has to do with your overall wellness. However, feeling overwhelmed consistently causes stress on your body and this can have an adverse affect your health.

It can be difficult to take things off your to do list. Yet most people can accomplish a lot more than they believe. If you use your time well you can achieve many, many things throughout each day. The key is to organize, plan, prioritize and schedule.

Staying organized is important. People waste valuable time searching for lost items. One of the best tools I have found to help with this is at www.evernote.com. This free software organizes all of your notes in one location. You can categorize them and they can immediately synchronize with your phone or any computer. You can share these notes with other people and you can easily do a search by typing in just one word. Best of all you can also record your notes with your phones voice recorder or camera. Evernote also allows you to quickly add notes to emails and websites. By keeping all your notes in one place, you no longer have to search for that sticky note that is always disappearing.

Now that you have all your notes in one place it is time to plan and prioritize. I like using the free to do lists at www.keepandshare.com. These are great because you can create multiple to do lists and prioritize them. For instance you can have a to do list for work and for your personal. You can also share these to do lists with other people, which is great, if you are working on a group project.

The final key to good time management is often the most difficult. You need to schedule when you are going to work on something and then you need to do it. I like using the calendar in Microsoft Outlook and Google for this task. I can share the Google calendar with others and it will automatically synchronize with my Outlook calendar on my computer and my phone.

There are also ways you can find additional time in your schedule. Replacing the time you spend watching television with something that needs to be done. If you are looking to find time to read or learn something new. Try audio books. You can listen to these while you drive, clean house, workout or while you get ready for the day. Reply to emails immediately. This way you can delete them and you don’t have to waste time looking at them twice.

By developing excellent time management skills, you will reduce your stress levels because you will no longer worry that you forgot something. You will no longer be stressed out that you do not have enough time to get things done. You will get a lot more accomplished which will give you a sense of pride and make you feel good.
