Salt Therapy

Breathing calmly in a salt room that is set up like a spa like fashion. We are told to avoid adding salt to our foods, but salt as a therapy?  I had the opportunity to visit a salt room earlier this year with a good friend of mine.  I went with an open mind and a lot of questions.  One that particularly stood out was “what the heck do I wear?”.  The answer to that question, so that you don’t have to worry is: anything you want, the salt brushes right off if it does get on your clothes

I am glad that I accepted the invitation because I now frequent the salt room for their yoga classes and it has made a world of difference in my running.  I had intended to get back into yoga for some time, knowing it would be good for my training, but had no idea the positive effects of yoga and salt therapy together would have.

My lungs felt stronger and I was getting less winded on my runs.  Of course it makes sense that the structured breathing practices of yoga would assist in this area, but it was more than that.  At the point where I would normally begin to feel my airways struggle to fill my lungs I was actually breathing calmly.

The salt has a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial property that cleans and opens your airways, obviously allowing for more air flow.  I began paying close attention to my breathing during runs directly following salt yoga versus the ones later in the week and noticed that my early runs were far more enjoyable and done with more ease.  This also helped to improve my times since I was stopping to catch my breath less.

Some salt rooms are designed to look like salt caves, however the one that I frequent is set up in a spa like fashion.  In the salt rooms the walls, floor and ceiling are all coated with pharmaceutical grade salt.  Then during your salt session, massage or yoga, the salt is pumped into the air using a halo generator.  Halos means salt in Greek, and the halo generator is designed to pump the salt into the air in tiny pieces that you breathe in.

Salt therapy is openly offered to treat allergies, asthma, bronchitis, mucus buildup, skin disorders and many other respiratory issues.  There are only a few areas that are lucky enough to have a salt room in the United States, but it is growing and hopefully will be available in more areas soon.

Salt yoga has made a big difference for me, I now attend class at least once a week, and aim for twice a week before a big race.   If you are interested in learning more information here is the link to the Salt Room I use http://saltroomvillages.com/ and the one in Orlando as well http://www.saltroomorlando.com/ .
